An iPhone First Aid App serves its Purpose in Haiti
Among the sea of iPhone applications that are just there to serve as time wasting entertainment, some are made to serve a more practical purpose. In a story coming from a man who was stuck in an elevator shaft for 65 hours in following the earthquake in Haiti, Dan Woolley used a first aid app on his iPhone to treat his wounds. The app on the phone instructed him on how treat the cut on his head and to stop the bleeding. It also guided him in making a tourniquet and bandage for his leg, which had a compound fracture. He was also able to make use of the alarm clock feature to keep him awake, so that he would not fall asleep if he went into shock.
It is nice to see an application that is not an addictive mindless game, but something useful get some recognition. It reminds us that technology is meant to aid us, not just to pacify us. Hopefully this will be an inspiration to developers to create even more helpful applications.
